titleOfInvention Steroid compounds
abstract The invention comprises 17a -hydroxy-20-keto-21-diazo-steroids of the pregnane series. C21-hydrazones of 17a -hydroxy-20-keto-21-al-steroids of the pregnane series, a process for the preparation of the 21-diazo-steroids by treating the C21-hydrazones with mercuric oxide in the presence of a base such as an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, a process for the preparation of C21-hydrazones by treating 17a -hydroxy-20-keto-21-al-steroids of the pregnane series with hydrazine, and a process for the preparation of 17,21-oxides of steroids by treating 21-diazo-17a -hydroxy-20-keto steroids of the pregnane series with phosphoric acid. The preferred 21-diazo-steroids have the general formula <FORM:0899371/IV (b)/1> the preferred C21- hydrazones have the general formula <FORM:0899371/IV (b)/2> and the preferred 17,21-oxides prepared by the above process have the general formula <FORM:0899371/IV (b)/3> wherein R is a keto or hydroxy group, X is a hydrogen or halogen atom, and the broken line in ring A indicates that the C1 and C2 carbon atoms may be saturated or unsaturated. 17a - Hyd oxy - 20 - keto - 21 - aldehydo steroids of the pregnane series are prepared by oxidising the correponding 21-ol steroids with copper acetate. Thus steroids of the general formula <FORM:0899371/IV (b)/4> wherein R is a keto or hydroxy group and X is hydrogen, or a halogen may be prepared.
