titleOfInvention Vinyloxyaryl mono sulphonic acids and salts thereof and their polymers
abstract The invention comprises a homopolymer of a vinyloxyaryl monosulphonic acid of the formula CH2=CH-O-Ar-SO3H or salt thereof, wherein Ar represents an aromatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic hydrocarbon group containing an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or halogen substituent (see Group IV(b)) and a copolymer of such a vinyloxyaryl monosulphonic acid or salt thereof with an unsaturated monomer. The aromatic group may be derived from benzene, diphenyl, naphthalene or anthracene and their alkylated homologues. Unsaturated monomers mentioned for use in copolymer preparation include olefines, diolefines, vinyl aromatic compounds, vinyl ethers, esters and ketones, unsaturated acids, esters, amides and nitriles. Copolymers mentioned include those obtained by copolymerizing vinyloxyaryl monosulphonic acids with acrylonitrile, optionally with an acrylic or methacrylic ester in addition. The polymerization is preferably carried out with the monomer or mixture of monomers dispersed in an aqueous medium in the presence of a conventional polymerization catalyst. Copolymers containing high proportions of sulphonic groups are water soluble and those containing lower proportions have affinity for basic dyes. The copolymers containing high proportions of sulphonic groups may be mixed with homopolymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile. In examples: A mixture of acrylonitrile, potassium vinyloxybenzene monosulphonate, water, sulphuric acid, sodium bisulphite and potassium chlorate is heated to obtain polymers from which films are prepared (II); in a similar process methyl methacrylate is included in the reaction mixture (III) and in a similar process the polymerization is carried out continuously, the product being converted to fibre and dyed.ALSO:The invention comprises vinyl-oxaryl monosulphonic acids of the general formula CH2=CH-O-Ar-SO3-H and their salts, where Ar represents an aromatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic hydrocarbon group containing an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl substituent or halogen substituent and a process for the preparation of the alkali metal salts which comprises sulphonating a compound of the general formula Hal-CH2-CH2-O-ArH where Hal is a halogen atom and subjecting the product to treatment with alkali metal hydroxide. The products are employed in the production of resinous homo- and copolymers (see Group IV(a)). The sulphonation is effected with any known sulphonating agent, e.g. hot concentrated sulphuric acid. The aromatic group may be derived from benzene which may be alkylated or cycloalkylated, diphenyl, naphthalene or anthracene and their alkylated, homologues. The preparation is described of sodium vinyloxybenzene mono-sulphonate by sulphonating b -bromo-ethoxy-benzene with sulphuric acid and dehydrohalogenating the product with sodium hydroxide solution. Halogenethoxy aryl compounds for use as starting materials are obtained by reacting dihalogenethanes, especially dibromoethane, with appropriate phenols in the presence of alkali.
