titleOfInvention Process for dyeing organic products with pigment dyestuffs of the nitro series
abstract Polymerization resins such as polyacrylonitrile, vinyl chloride polymers, polyvinyl acetals, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, mixed polymers of the styrene with polyesters of unsaturated dicarboxylic acids with diols and acrylate polymers; condensation resins such as urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, epoxy resins, polyurethane resins and alkyd resins; silicone resins; lacquers containing one or more such resins in an organic solvent, and aqueous emulsions containing one or more such resins, for example oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions; viscose, cellulose esters and nitrocellulose lacquers are dyed with a pigment of the formula:- <FORM:0897974/IV (a)/1> where R is an alkyl group of up to 4 carbon atoms. In examples, the pigment of the above formula where R is methyl is (1) ground with dioctyl phthalate, mixed with polyvinyl chloride, dioctyl phthalate, cadmium stearate and titanium dioxide and rolled to give a brown film; (4) ground with an alkyd melamine stoving lacquer containing titanium dioxide; (3) incorporated in an acetyl-cellulose and acetone spinning mass; (5) ground with the sodium salt of 1:11-dinaphthylmethane-2:21-disulphonic acid and water and the suspension mixed with a viscose spinning solution; (2) ground with a nitrocellulose lacquer and titanium dioxide; and (8) ground with the glycerine ester of hydrogenated colophonium sodium chloride and diacetone alcohol, followed by removal of the last-mentioned substances, drying and addition of toluene to form a lacquer colourant.ALSO:Nitro dyes of the formula: <FORM:0897974/IV (c)/1> where R is an alkyl group of up to 4 carbon atoms are made by condensing one mol of an appropriate 4 : 41-diamino-3 : 31-di-alkoxydiphenyl with 2 mols of 2 : 4-dinitro-chlorobenzene. Aqueous emulsions containing such dyes and one or more polymerization, condensation or silicone resins or precondensates, if desired, in the presence of organic solvents, are used for impregnating or printing on textiles, paper and leather, if necessary, with subsequent heat treatment. In Examples (6) cotton fabric is immersed in a dyebath containing a mixed-polymer latex of isobutyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and acrylic acid, a methylol melamine allyl ether emulsified with Turkey Red oil and modified with soybean fatty acid, a water-soluble methyl ether of a urea-formaldehyde condensation product, a pigment suspension made by grinding a dye of the above formula with the sodium salt of 1 : 11-dinaphthylmethane-2 : 21-disulphonic acid, and 10% formic acid, and the fabric is dried and hardened by heating; (7) a paste made by kneading a dye of the above formula with an ethylene oxide-di-tert.-butyl-p-cresol addition product and then mixing with a petroleum hydrocarbon-water emulsion containing a styrene-butadiene emulsion mixed polymer, a water-insoluble melamine formaldehyde primary condensate modified with n-butanol, n-butanol, an aqueous ion-free emulsifier, and ammonium nitrate is printed on to fabrics of natural or regenerated cellulose or of synthetic fibres and the fabrics are heat-treated; (9) a pigment dispersion made by grinding a dye of the above formula with casein solution and a dispersing medium and then mixing the paste with a wax emulsion and casein solution and then with sodium sulphoricinoleate, egg albumen, casein solution and water, is applied to chrome grain leather and levelled, a casein solution is then applied and hardened with formaldehyde and the leather mechanically glazed and hot-pressed; and (10) a paste made by grinding a dye of the above formula with casein solution and a dispersing medium and mixing with a wax emulsion and casein solution is mixed with sodium sulphoricinoleate, casein solution and a polyacrylic acid ester emulsion and the pigment suspension obtained is applied to buffed leather, dried and hot-pressed, and glazed with casein solution and formaldehyde followed by drying and hot pressing. Specification 822,504 is referred to.
