titleOfInvention Arrangement for the reproduction and/or amplification of colour television pictures by means of an electroluminescent screen
abstract 896,799. Electroluminescent screens. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 19, 1958 [Sept. 25, 1957], No. 30054/58. Class 39(1). An electroluminescent screen for the amplification and/or reproduction of colour television pictures comprises a grooved electrically conductive screen 1 in front of which are arranged parallel conductors 2 each third conductor being connected with each other third conductor in three groups a, b, c and each conductor of each group being associated with a similar basic colour electroluminescent phosphors 4, 5, 6, either red, green or blue, and a photo-conductive layer 3 arranged between the screen 1 and the phosphors. The phosphors can be applied to the conductors by electrophoresis, and then saturated with a material of high dielectric constant, or embedded therein. A light spot is arranged to scan the screen, the spot being derived from a picture tube and thereby being modulated with the picture signal and an A.C. supply 7 is switched in synchronism with the transmitting signal to apply A.C. to the group of conductors a, b or c associated with the appropriate colour. In a modification the photo-conductive layer 3 is applied to the conductors and the phosphor layers to the screen 1. The colour of the screen of the picture tube is arranged to correspond to the absorption maximum of the photo conductive layer 3. In order to avoid feedback the photoconductive layer is chosen so as to have a sensitivity range outside the spectral region 'for red, green and blue, or a light absorbent layer can be arranged between the phosphors and the photo-conductive layer The screen 1 can be of light-reflecting metal, or can be of mica or glass with a conductive coating of stannic oxide so that the light of a television picture can be thrown on the screen on the side turned away from the viewer.
