titleOfInvention | Synthetic crystalline zeolites |
abstract | A synthetic zeolitic aluminosilicate molecular sieve of formula <FORM:0896784/III/1> where X is from 0 to 1,4, designated zeolite J, having a characteristic X-ray diffraction pattern, wherein M is a K, Na, Ag, Ca hydrogen or ammonium ion, is prepared by first forming the potassium zeolite concerned and forming the other isomorphs by ion exchange with the potassium form. The latter may be prepared by heating a mixture having a mole ratio of oxides: K2O/SiO2 of 3,7 to 4, SiO2/Al2O3 of 4, and H2O/K2O of 9,7 to 10 at a temperature of about 100 DEG C. Silica may be provided as silica gel, silicic acid or potassium silicate, alumina as activated, alpha or gamma alumina, alumina trihydrate, aluminium hydroxide or potassium aluminate and potassium hydroxide may supply the potassium ions. The reaction mixture, for example an aqueous solution of potassium aluminate and hydroxide and a solution of potassium silicate, may be mixed to ensure homogeneity and heated to 100 DEG C. to effect crystallization, and the crystals washed with distilled water p until the effluent wash has a pH of 9 to 12. The zeolite may be activated by heating at 350 DEG C., or by maintaining at room temperature under vacuum, and may thereafter be used in a cyclic adsorption-desorption process particularly where the material adsorbed is water. Reference is made to the separation of water from carbon dioxide or ethylene by means of this zeolite and to the adsorption of ammonia and sulphur dioxide. The zeolite may be pelleted with a bonding agent such as clay. In preparing isomorphs from the potassium form, the exchange solution preferably has a pH from 5 to 12. |
