titleOfInvention Improved method of and means for mounting electrical components
abstract 896,728. Semi-conductor devices. ERICSSON TELEPHONES Ltd. March 7, 1960 [April 8, 1959], No. 11811/59. Class 37. A photo-cell is mounted on one face of a transparent insulating support and is encapsulated in a synthetic resinous material which may also enclose the insulating support or of which the support may form nearly all one side. Fig. 1 shows a section through an encapsulated cell comprising a photo-conductive layer 11 mounted on a glass plate 10 and bearing electrode layers 12 in the form of an interdigitated grid to which wires 13 are connected. The device is encapsulated in an epoxy-ethane resin for example "Araldite" type d (Registered Trade Mark). Fig. 2 shows the cell in a mould 14 supported on a glass backing plate before coating the resin. By supporting the cell on leads 13 the plate 15 may be wholly encapsulated. The conductive layer may be protected from resin or incident light by picein wax or beeswax. In large cells the coefficient of expansion of the resin may be lowered to that of the glass by the incorporation of powdered talc. The glass support may be coloured to act as a filter and, in the case of complete encapsulation, so may the resin. The sensitivity of the cell may be modified by pigmenting the resin because light is reflected from the inner walls of the encapsulation of the cell. The use of a white pigment, for example titanium dioxide, is suggested. The electrodes are formed by spraying a suspension of colloidal silver on to the photo-conductive layer through a mask and wires 13 are connected to the electrodes using conductive silver paste as an adhesive. Specification 820,547 is referred to.
