titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to methods for making internally slitted strip metal
abstract 896,713. Making pipes; cans &c. REVERE COPPER & BRASS Inc. Jan. 28, 1959 [July 31, 1958], No. 3126/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of making a metal strip 5, Fig. 1, having a longitudinal slit 3 which can be expanded by fluid-pressure or a plug to form a tube, can, &c., 1, Fig. 2, a cast billet 8, Fig. 3, of square cross-section and containing a thin body 9 of pulverized or pulverizable stop-weld which extends close to the edges of the billet is hot-rolled between grooved rolls 17, 19, 21, Fig. 4, to reduce its width and thickness, the body 9 being parallel to the roll-axes in some of the passes and perpendicular in others. After hot-rolling, the billet of copper, aluminium, steel, iron or nickel alloy, &c., having stop-weld of graphite, soapstone, alumina, magnesia, silica or diatomaceous earth, is pickled, cleaned and cold-rolled (not shown) to the desired thickness, Fig. 1. The stop-weld in powder form, may be used to fill a passage in the billet, or it may be mixed with water and a binder such as calcium aluminate, sodium silicate, phenolic resins, &c., moulded into a rod, dried and baked, the billet being cast around the rod. In the hotrolling step, Fig. 4, the billet is passed back and forth in the pass-grooves 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 between the coupled rolls 17, 19, 21. Additional roll-sets may be used, and the billet re-heated between sets. The stop-weld is edge-on to the roll-axes in passes 11, 13, 14 and 15 and parallel thereto in passes 12 and 16. Alternatively, the stop-weld may be edge-on in pass 12 and parallel in pass 14. In the cold-rolling step, the work is annealed when it becomes work-hardened. Strip and billet sizes and a rolling temperature are given.
