abstract <PICT:0896218/III/1> In polycondensation processes in which the components are heated in the molten state in a vessel, the condensation is monitored by means of two elements in close proximity, one of which is rotated whilst the torque imparted to the second is indicative of the viscosity of the melt and thus of the degree of polycondensation. As illustrated in the Figure, the monitoring device is inserted into an autoclave and sealed therewith at X and Y: a motor E drives a shaft F located in a casing G and having a disc A which rotates at a fixed speed and imparts a torque to a disc B supported on torque tube C. The angular deflection of disc B is recorded by means of a differential transformer D. The apparatus may first be calibrated to relate transformer output with viscosity. The process is applicable, for example, to the production of polyethylene terephthalate, as such or modified with an isophthalate or sebacate component, the polyester derived from terephthalic acid and 1 : 4 cyclohexanedimethanol and the polyamide derived from polyhexamethylene adipamide. According to the Provisional Specification, the apparatus may also be used for depolymerization.
