titleOfInvention | Low foam detergent compositions |
abstract | A detergent composition with little tendency to foam comprises (a) a mixture of benzyl ethers of formula <FORM:0895596/III/1> where D is an alkyl group of 8-15 carbon atoms and m is 12-40, and (b) a mixture of compounds of formula <FORM:0895596/III/2> where R is an alkyl group of 3-18 carbon atoms, and X is 3-10; (b) is preferably present in an amount of 0,1-10%, preferably 0,5-5%, by weight of the total amount of (a) together with any alkylphenoxypolyethenoxyethanol present as contaminant of (a). It is preferred that R and D be both octyl groups. Sodium silicate borate and tetrapolyphosphate, and potassium pyrophosphate may also be incorporated.ALSO:Benzyl ethers of alkylphenoxypolyetheroxyethanols having the general formula <FORM:0895596/IV (a)/1> where D is an alkyl group of 8 to 15 carbon atoms, and m has an average value of 12 to 40 are obtained by reacting the appropriate alkylphenoxy-polyethenoxyethanol with benzyl chloride or bromide in the presence of a strong base such as sodium or potassium-hydroxide, or sodium methoxide, e.g. in a volatile solvent such as benzene or xylene, at 50 to 200 DEG C., excess reactants being thereafter removed, and the product washed with water, dried under vacuum and filtered. Alkylphenol-formaldehyde condensates of general formula <FORM:0895596/IV (a)/2> where R is an alkyl group of 3 to 18 carbon atoms and X has an average value of 3 to 10 are obtained by refluxing the appropriate alkylphenol with trioxane at 80 to 145 DEG C. in the presence of an organic sulphonic acid catalyst, e.g. p-toluene- or butane-sulphonic acid, and an inert solvent such as benzene, toluene, heptane, or octane; when the reaction is complete the catalyst is removed by washing with water and the polymeric product isolated.ALSO:Benzyl ethers of alkylphenoxypolyethenoxyethanols having the general formula <FORM:0895596/IV (b)/1> where D is an alkyl group of 8-15 carbon atoms, and m has an average value of 12-40 are obtained by reacting the appropriate alkylphenoxypolyethenoxyethanol with benzyl chloride or bromide in the presence of a strong base such as sodium or potassium hydroxide or sodium methoxide, e.g. in a volatile solvent such as benzene or xylene, at 50 DEG C.-200 DEG C., excess reactants being thereafter removed, and the product washed with water, dried under vacuum, and filtered. Alkylphenol - formaldehyde condensates of general formula <FORM:0895596/IV (b)/2> where R is an alkyl group of 3-18 carbon atoms and X has an average value of 3-10 are obtained by refluxing the appropriate alkylphenol with trioxane at 80 DEG C.-145 DEG C. in the presence of an organic sulphonic acid, e.g. p-toluene- or butanesulphonic acid, and an inert solvent such as benzene, toluene, heptane, or octane, when the reaction is complete the sulphonic acid catalyst is removed by washing with water and the polymeric product isolated. |
