titleOfInvention | Purification and fractionation of petroleum sulphonate mixtures |
abstract | Alkali metal and/or ammonium salts of mixtures of petroleum sulphonic acids are purified and fractionated by contacting with a weak ion-exchange resin impregnated with an aliphatic polar organic compound with up to 6 carbon atoms, and recovering the adsorbed salts by elution with organic solvents. The polar compounds may be alcohols, e.g. methyl, ethyl, and isopropyl; glycols, e.g. ethylene, propylene and hexylene; polyglycols, e.g. diethylene and triethylene glycol; ketones, e.g. acetone and methyl ethyl ketone; aldehydes, e.g. acetaldehyde, and acids, e.g. acetic and propionic acid and may be used for impregnation as aqueous solutions. The salts of the petroleum sulphonic acids are dissolved in solvents such as petroleum spirit, isooctane, straight or branched chain hydrocarbons, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene and xylene and passed over, for example in a column, the weak ion-exchange resins which may be those based on acrylate or methacrylate polymers with carboxylic acid groups, phenol-formaldehyde resins with phenolic or polyamine groups, amino or alkylamino substituted polystyrenes, and polymers of aliphatic polyamines. The absorbed salts are collected in fractions by solvents in order of decreasing equivalent weights, as the polarity of the solvent increases. |
