titleOfInvention Polymerization of olefins
abstract A catalyst system for polymerizing alpha-olefinic monomers comprises (1) a composition containing titanium, chlorine and aluminium of the type described in Specification 895,418 and which is made by reacting titanium tetrachloride, aluminium, and an inert organic diluent, at a temperature of 80 to 220 DEG C., (2) a Grignard reagent and (3) an inert organic solvent. The reagent may be either a lower alkyl or phenyl Grignard reagent. Exemplified reagents are methyl isopropyl, or cyclohexyl magnesium chloride, ethyl, butyl, or phenyl magnesium bromide, and methyl magnesium iodide. The organic diluent may be benzene, toluene, xylene, heptane, cyclohexane, diethyl ether, kerosene, or chlorobenzene. Exemplified olefines are ethylene, and propylene. Polyethylene made by polymerizing ethylene using the catalyst system has a softening temperature range above 200 DEG C., a tensile strength of at least 3,500 p.s.i., a torsional modulus of less than 60,000 p.s.i. at 25 DEG C., and less than 160,000 p.s.i. at -50 DEG C. and is insoluble in tetrahydronaphthalene at a temperature of 200 DEG C. Polypropylene made by polymerizing propylene using the catalyst system has a softening temperature above 180 DEG C., a tensile strength of at least 1,500 p.s.i., a flexibility ratio over a temperature range of from 25 DEG C. to -50 DEG C. not greater than 2, and the polymer is insoluble in tetrahydronaphthalene at a temperature of 160 DEG C.
