titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of acetic acid
abstract Catalysts for the reaction of formaldehyde with carbon monoxide and water to produce acetic acid comprise at least one halogen and at least one of the metals iron, cobalt and nickel. The halogens and metals may be used in elementary or combined form. Examples are given of the use of the following catalysts: (a) a mixture of iodine and cobalt hydroxide; (b) a mixture of cobalt carbonyl and iodine; (c) a mixture of iron powder and iodine; and (d) a mixture of cobalt acetate and ethyl iodide.ALSO:Acetic acid is produced by reacting formaldehyde with carbon monoxide and water under a pressure greater than 100 kg/cm2 and at a temperature of 150 DEG C.-350 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a halide of iron, cobalt or nickel or a mixture of two or more such halides; or of a halogen or halogen-containing compound or a mixture of two or more thereof and iron, cobalt or nickel or a compound of iron, cobalt or nickel, or a mixture of two or more thereof. Examples are given of the conversion of formaldehyde to acetic acid using as catalyst (a) nickel iodide; (b) a mixture of iodine and cobalt hydroxide; (c) nickel bromide; (d) a mixture of cobalt carbonyl and iodine; (e) a mixture of iron powder and iodine; and (f) a mixture of cobalt acetate and ethyl iodide.
