titleOfInvention | Preparation of halofluorocarbons |
abstract | 894,885. Preparing halo-fluorocarbons, electrolytically. DOW CHEMICAL CO. June 15, 1960, No. 20989/60. Class 41. Halo-fluoro-carbon compounds are prepared by electrolysing a molten mixture of a metal fluoride and a metal chloride or bromide,.using a porous carbon anode, e.g. of petroleum coke, graphite, or carbon black mixed with a binder and sintered. Preferably the carbon anode has a permeability of 4 to 20, defined as a quantitative measure of the volume of air passing through under standardized conditions of pressure. The metal fluoride is of alkali or alkaline earth metal or an earth metal, e.g. Li, Na, Ca, Al, or Mg and the metal chloride is also of these groups and is preferably the same metal as the fluoride, e.g. CaF2 and CaCl2, where CaCl2 also acts as a melting-point depressant. Other metal chlorides which may be used are of Cu, Cr, Pb, Mo, Mn, and Cd. Other electrolyte mixtures specified include MgF2, LiF and MgCl2 or MgBr2, and many others. In a suitable cell having an insulating liner 3 to contain the molten electrolyte mixture 4, the anode carbon lead 5 is immersed in a particulate layer of carbon 13 preferably of 6 to 40 standard mesh screen, and loosely confined on the surface of the electrolyte. A sintered solid anode of the required porosity may be used, in which a solid carbon rod has a central passage ending in a cup opening closed by a plug of the sintered carbon. A layer of molten lead 12 acts as cathode. Temperatures of 700 to 1000 C. are applied. The products passing out through a pipe 7 include, mainly, CF4, CF3Cl, CF2Cl2, CF3Br, and C2F6. |
