titleOfInvention Heterocyclic dyestuffs derived from benzanthrone and process for their manufacture
abstract Spinning compositions of viscose, cellulose esters or polyacrylonitrile are dyed brown with a dye of the formula: <FORM:0894150/IV (a)/1> where A is an alkylene radical or a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic residue in which the two -CO- groups or the -CO- group and the -C = C-group which are attached to the same nitrogen atom are separated from one another by 2 or 3 carbon atoms, n is 1 or 2 if A is aromatic or n is 1 if A is alkylene, and R is hydrogen or an organic residue and where the benzanthrone residue or residues may be further substituted. When the above dyestuff is used in high-melting spinning compositions such as superpolyamides or polyethylene terephthalate, ring closure in the melt occurs and the violet dyestuff of the formula: <FORM:0894150/IV (a)/2> is formed. The dyestuff of formula (2) may also be used directly for dyeing viscose, cellulose esters, polyacrylonitrile, polyamides, e.g. nylon, and polyesters, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate spinning compositions. In examples, dyes of the formulae (1) and (2) are each "bread-crumbed" with (6) hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid and (7) polyethylene terephthalate, and spun to yield violet fibres.ALSO:The invention comprises dyestuffs of the formulae <FORM:0894150/IV (c)/1> where A is an alkylene radical or a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic residue in which the two -CO- groups or the -CO- group and the -C=C- group which are attached to the same nitrogen atom are separated from one another by 2 or 3 carbon atoms, n is 1 or 2 if A is aromatic or n is 1 if A is alkylene, and R is hydrogen or an organic residue, and in which dyestuff the benzanthrone residue or residues may be further substituted. Aromatic residues specified for A are derived from benzene, naphthalene, anthraquinone and pyridine and alkylene residues specified are ethylene, propylene and vinylene. The dyestuffs are made by heating one molecular proportion of an acid of the formula <FORM:0894150/IV (c)/2> or its anhydride or acid halide, when n is 1 with one molecular proportion or, when n is 2 with two molecular proportions of an amine of the formula <FORM:0894150/IV (c)/3> at temperatures below the melting point of the brown or grey cyclic imide obtained which is of the formula (1) above, and if desired heating the imide above its melting point to obtain the violet dyestuff of the formula (2) above, and if desired subjecting this to halogenation. Examples are given. The dyestuffs are used in spin-dyeing (see Group IV(a)) and some may be used as vat dyestuffs.
