titleOfInvention | Halogenated o-quinones |
abstract | A process for producing an o-benzoquinone having the formula <FORM:0894060/IV (b)/1> wherein X represents chlorine and/or bromine comprises oxidizing a phenol having the formula <FORM:0894060/IV (b)/2> wherein X is chlorine and/or bromine with nitric acid or like oxidizing agent as defined below, in the presence of an organic solvent which is inert to the oxidizing agent under the reaction conditions comprising a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon, an aromatic hydrocarbon, a nitro or halogen derivative of any of said hydrocarbons or a mixture of any two or more of these solvents. The term "nitric acid or like oxidizing agent" is defined to include aqueous, commercial concentrated, pure and fuming nitric acids and nitric anhydride. The required nitric acid may be formed in situ by supplying the required nitrogen oxide, oxygen and water. Representative of the many solvents specified for use in the process are methylene chloride, isooctane, nitromethane, petroleum ether, toluene, amylbenzene, trifluorotrichloroethane, chlorobenzene, 1,5-dibromopentane, nitrotoluene and ethylene bromide. In examples the preparation is described of chlor- and bromanils, 3-chloro-4, 5, 6 - tribromo - and 3 - bromo - 4, 5, 6 - trichlorobenzo-quinones. |
