titleOfInvention Steroid compounds and therapeutic compositions containing steroid compounds
abstract The invention comprises steroid compounds of the general formula. <FORM:0893315/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical containing from 4 to 6 carbon atoms, and the preparation thereof by reacting the corresponding 3-methyl or 3-ethyl enol ether with an excess of an alcohol of the formula ROH wherein R has the above significance, in the presence of a catalytic amount of an acid catalyst, e.g. an organic sulphonic acid such as a toluene-, benzene- or naphthalene sulphonic acid. In the detailed examples the 3-butyl, sec-butyl, n-aryl, n-hexyl, 41-methylpentyl, 21-methylpentyl, 11,31-dimethylbutyl and cyclohexyl enol ethers of progesterone, the 3-cyclopentyl enol ether of 17a -hydroxy-progesterone, and the 3-n-aryl, n-hexyl, cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl enol ethers of 17a -acetoxy-progesterone are prepared.ALSO:A therapeutic composition having progestational activity and suitable for oral administration comprises one or more steroids of the general formula <FORM:0893315/VI/1> wherein R represents an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical containing from 4 to 6 carbon atoms, and a liquid or solid non-toxic pharmaceutical carrier, e.g. an orally ingestible oil or fat such as olive, sesame, linseed, sunflour, wheat germ, egg yolk or pine oil, or butter, lard, margarine or chocolate.
