titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of methionine
abstract In a process for preparing methionine, methylthiopropionic aldehyde is reacted with ammonia and hydrocyanic acid in a dilute alcoholic solution containing not more than 5% by weight of methylthiopropionic aldehyde, the reaction mixture is freed from excess ammonia and hydrocyanic acid by evaporation and concentrated in a distillation column (in which the escaping vapours of alcohol are drawn off by a pump, compressed and used for the indirect heating of the sump portion of the distillation column and, after having been liquefied, are partly pumped to the head of the distillation column) and after removal of the solvent from the solution of the reaction mixture collected in the sump of the column the reaction product is converted into methionine by hydrolysis. Specification 670,774 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,485,236, 2,520,312, 2,543,768, 2,557,013, 2,564,105, 2,732,400 and Swiss Specification 257,403 are referred to.ALSO:In a process for preparing methionine, methylthiopropionic aldehyde is reacted with ammonia and hydrocyanic acid in a dilute alcoholic solution containing not more than 5% by weight of methylthiopropionic aldehyde, the reaction mixture is freed from excess ammonia and hydrocyanic acid by evaporation, and concentrated in a distillation column (in which the escaping vapours of alcohol are drawn off by a pump, compressed and used for the indirect heating of the sump portion of the distillation column, and having been liquified, are partly pumped to the head of the distillation column) and after removal of the solvent from the solution of the reaction mixture collected in the sump of the column, the reaction mixture is converted into methionine by hydrolysis preferably by passing the nitrile over a strongly acidic ion-exchanger, and eluting with ammonia.
