titleOfInvention Improvements relating to the polymerisation of olefins
abstract In a process for the polymerization of olefins there is employed a catalyst comprising (A) an organometallic compound of a metal of Group I, II or III of the Mendeleef Periodic Table and (B) two metal salts of which at least one (a) is of a metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa and at least one (b) is a salt of a metal of Group I, II, IV or VIII complexed with a nitrogenous organic base the molar ratio of (b) to (a) being at least 0,05. The olefin may be ethylene, propylene or butene. The salt (b) may be a lithium, beryllium, magnesium, cupric, cadmium, zinc, ferric, nickelous or titanium IV halide, e.g. chloride, and the preferred base is pyridine. Examples describe the use of catalysts comprising aluminium triethyl and titanium trichloride with (1) CuCl2.2Py, BeCl2.2Py, ZnCl2.-2Py, CdCl2.2Py, MgCl2.4Py, NiCl2.4Py and FeCl3.4Py; (2) NiCl2.4Py; (3, 6 and 10) ZnCl2.-2Py; (4) CdCl2.2Py; (7) LiCl2.2Py; (8) TiCl4.2Py and (9) TiCl3.3Py; and aluminium triethyl and vanadium chloride with (5) ZnCl2.2Py. Polymerization may be effected in liquid media, e.g. heptane and butane, and the products washed with methanolic hydrochloric acid and methanol.
