titleOfInvention Organo-tin compounds and process for their manufacture
abstract Organo-tin compounds soluble in organic solvents are made by reacting an organo-tin trihalide of the general formula R-Sn-X3 where R represents a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms or the cyclohexyl group and X represents a halogen, with an inorganic alkali or an organic base, and dehydrating the resultant reaction product. Specified organo-tin trihalides are ethyl tin trichloride, butyl tin trichloride, allyl tin trichloride, hexyl tin trichloride, octyl tin trichloride, octadecenyl tin trichloride, octadecyl tin trichloride and cyclohexyl tin trichloride. Specified alkalies are sodium hydroxide, milk of lime, ammonium hydroxide and substances which form alkalies by hydrolysis, e.g. alkali sulphides, alkali carbonates and sodium stearate. In the examples, polymers are made by reacting in the presence of water:- (1) butyl tin trichloride and ammonia; (2) butyl tin trichloride and caustic soda; (3) hexyl tin trichloride and caustic soda; (4) butyl tin trichloride and sodium sulphide and (5) and (6) butyl tin trichloride, sodium sulphide and caustic soda. The products of the examples being soluble in butanol, chloroform, benzene, toluene, carbon tetrachloride and lacquer benzine.ALSO:Organo-tin polymers soluble in organic solvents of formula (R-Sn-X1,5)n where R is a saturated or unsaturated C1-C18 hydrocarbon radical, X represents O and/or S and n is 1-4, are made by reacting an organo-tin trihalide of the general formula R-Sn-Hal3, with an inorganic alkali or an organic base, and dehydrating the resultant stannonic acid. Specified organo-tin trihalides are ethyl tin trichloride, butyl tin trichloride, allyl tin trichloride, hexyl tin trichloride, octyl tin trichloride, octadecenyl tin trichloride, octadecyl tin trichloride and cyclohexyl tin trichloride. Specified alkalies are sodium hydroxide, milk of lime, ammonium hydroxide and substances which form alkalies by hydrolysis, e.g. alkali sulphides, alkali carbonates and sodium stearate.
