titleOfInvention Process for the production of graft copolymers
abstract A graft copolymer is prepared by polymerizing in the presence of an alkali metal hydrocarbon catalyst a monomer capable of forming a living polymer by an anionic mechanism, mixing the resulting living polymer with a halogen-containing polymer in which at least some of the halogen atoms are capable of being removed by reaction with an alkali metal or an alkali metal hydrocarbon, and recovering the graft copolymer so obtained, the two reaction steps being effected under an inert atmosphere. Specified monomers are styrene, nitroethylene, 2-nitropropylene, 1-chloronitroethylene, alkyl acrylates, acrylamides, acrylonitrile, vinyl ketone, vinyl corbazole, butadiene, isoprene and vinylidene chloride. Specified halogen-containing polymers are polyvinyl chloride, brominated butyl rubber, polychloroprene, halogenated polyethylene, and halogenated polypropylene. Specified alkali metal hydrocarbon catalysts are phenyl lithium, butyl lithium and sodium naphthalene. The anionic polymerization may take place in bulk or, preferably, solution, e.g. in 1,4-dioxone or tetrahydrofuran. The graft copolymer may be precipitated from solution using methanol, washed with methanol and water, dried and extracted with benzene.
