titleOfInvention Dihydroxy steroids
abstract The invention comprises compounds having the formula <FORM:0887748/IV (b)/1> in which R is a lower alkanoyl radical <FORM:0887748/IV (b)/2> is the trivalent radical <FORM:0887748/IV (b)/3> or <FORM:0887748/IV (b)/4> and -C1-C2- is the divalent radical -CH2-CH2- or -CH=CH-and a process for preparing 16a 17a -dihydroxy steroids of the pregnane series characterised by treating a 16b -hydroxy (or alkanoyloxy)-17a -hydroxy (or alkanoyloxy) steroid of the pregnane series with a base e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide an alkali metal carbonate an alkali metal bicarbonate or an alkali metal alkoxide. The starting 16b -alkanoyloxy 17a -hydroxy steroids may be obtained by reacting a 16a -epoxy steroid with an alkanoic acid and an acidic reagent, e.g. a mixture of sulphuric and acetic acids. Specification 824,351 is referred to.
