titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of synthetic resin emulsions
abstract Emulsified polymers or copolymers of styrene are prepared by dispersing styrene, with or without a comonomer, in an aqueous medium containing in solution a small quantity of a copolymer of vinyl ester-maleic anhydride copolymer or an alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof, and heating to polymerize the monomers. An amount of maleic anhydride copolymer of 1 to 5%, to yield a final emulsion of pH 6 to 7 is preferred and a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide or a persulphate may be present and added portionwise during the reaction. Additional monomers may also be added during the reaction, and a plasticizer, e.g. tritolyl phosphate, dibutyl, dioctyl or dibutyl glycol phthalates may be dispersed in the mixture before, during or after the reaction. A further emulsifying agent such as a polyethylene oxide ether of a long chain fatty alcohol or alkyl phenol may also be present. Examples describe the preparation of stable, plasticized and unplasticized emulsions of polystyrene of differing viscosity, and of copolymers of styrenedinonyl fumarate, styrene-ethyl acrylate, and styrene-b -ethoxyethyl methacrylate.
