titleOfInvention | Improvements in soluble catalysts for ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer rubbers |
abstract | Rubbery copolymers of ethylene with from 15 to 90% by weight of an alpha-olefin of the formula CH2-CHR, in which R is an alkyl radical of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, are made by copolymerizing a mixture of ethylene and the alpha-olefin in the chosen proportions in the presence of a catalyst substantially completely soluble in the reaction medium and formed by the admixture of vanadium tetrachloride, or vanadyl trichloride, or mixtures thereof, with one or more organo-aluminium compounds having the formula Al R1n X3-n in which n is 1 or 2, R1 is any saturated alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, and X is chlorine or bromine, and the molar ratio of aluminium to vanadium in the catalyst is from more than 5:1 to 50:1. The organo-aluminium compound may be a reaction product formed from a mixture of AlR13 and AlX3 in which the molar ratio of AlR13 to AlX3 is from 1:2 to 2:1. The polymerization may be effected in bulk or in the presence of an organic solvent or diluent, e.g. a petroleum distillate fraction, or benzene, or toluene. The monomers may be added continuously or portionwise. Specified alpha-olefins are propylene, and 1-butene. The organo-aluminium compound may be diethyl aluminium chloride, diisobutyl aluminium bromide, ethyl aluminium dichloride, dodecyl aluminium dibromide, isobutyl aluminium dibromide, or mixtures thereof. Specifications 856,733, 856,736 and 856,737 are referred to. |
