titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the purification of hydrocarbon polymers
abstract Hydrocarbon polymers prepared by the polymerization of terminally unsaturated olefins with transition metal catalysts comprising a salt, e.g. a halide, of a transition metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa and an organometallic compound of Group I to III, a metal hydride or an alkali metal are freed from catalyst residues by mixing, in the absence of extraneous alcohols, the polymerization mixture, maintained above 125 DEG C. under superatmospheric pressure and containing the dissolved hydrocarbon polymer and a residue of the transition metal catalyst in an inert liquid hydrocarbon medium, with a quantity of a chelating agent, other than a dihydroxy alcohol, sufficient to form a metal chelate with the transition metal and thereafter treating the polymerization mixture at a temperature above 125 DEG C. with a silica or alumina adsorbent to remove the metal chelate. The adsorbent can be regenerated with water or steam at elevated temperatures. The olefin may be ethylene or propylene and the polymer may be a copolymer of ethylene with other hydrocarbon monomers, e.g. butene. The chelating agent may be acetylacetone, benzoylacetone, trifluoroacetylacetone, tropolone, o-phthalic acid, salicylic acid, thenoyltrifluoroacetone, o-dihydroxy-benzene, biphenol, o-hydroxybenzaldehyde, o-hydroxyphenone or o-aminophenol. After removal of the polymer solution from the adsorbent, the polymer may be isolated by distillation of the solvent, e.g. cyclohexane, decane, benzene or toluene, or by precipitation by addition of solvents, such as methanol. Catalyst components specified are titanium tetrachloride, vanadium oxytrichloride, aluminium triisobutyl and lithium aluminium tetradecyl and the catalyst may comprise three such components. The polymerization and purification may be carried out continuously. Specification 777,538 also is referred to.
