titleOfInvention Improvements in steroids and the synthesis thereof
abstract The invention comprises cyclopentanophenanthrene compounds of the general formula <FORM:0885439/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents the acyl radical of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid of less than 13 carbon atoms and R1 represents hydrogen or the acyl radical of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing less than 13 carbon atoms, and the preparation thereof by reacting 16a ,17a -dihydroxyprogesterone with an acid anhydride or an acid halide of the required carboxylic acid to form the required 16a ,17a -diester of the above general formula, and when required, treating the diester with a dilute basic reagent such as a dilute solution of an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate in a lower alcohol, to form the 17-monoester of the above general formula. The 17-monoester may be subsequently acylated at the 16-position to form a 16,17-diester having different ester groups. The ester groups may be derived from alkanoic, aromatic, aralkanoic, cycloalkane carboxylic, alkenoic and cycloalkene carboxylic acids. In the examples the 16, 17 - dicaproate, 17 - monocaproate, 16 - acetate 17-caproate, 16,17-diacetate, 17-monoacetate and 16-benzoate 17-acetate of 16a ,17a -dihydroxyprogesterone are prepared.
