titleOfInvention Interpolyesters of bibenzoic acid, a glycol, and an acyclic dicarboxylic acid
abstract New linear copolyesters, suitable for the man ufacture of films, fibres, moulded articles and coatings contain the residues of (1) Bibenzoic acid, (2) An acyclic dicarboxylic acid having the formula HOOC-(RX)n-R1-COOH where R and R1 are the same or different aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals containing 1-12 carbon atoms and X is an ether oxygen atom or a sulphone radical and n is 0-6 and (3) a glycol having the formula (a) HO-(R11X)nR11-OH wherein R11 is a divalent straight or branchedchain aliphatic radical containing 2-10 p carbon atoms, X is an ether oxygen atom or a sulphone radical and n is 1-6, or (b) HO-(CH2)m-Ar-(CH2)m-OH wherein Ar is a mono- or di-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbon radical containing 6-12 nuclear carbon atoms and m is 1-4, or <FORM:0884680/IV (a)/1> wherein R11, X and n are the same as in (a), Ar is the same as in (b), and p is 0-4, or (d) HO-(CH2)o-R111-(CH2)o-OH wherein R111 is an alicyclic hydrocarbon radical containing 4-6 carbon atoms and p is the same as in (c), or <FORM:0884680/IV (a)/2> wherein R11, X and n are the same as in (a), p is the same as in (c) and R111 is the same as in (d). A large number of acyclic dicarboxylic acids and glycols falling within the above formulae are specified. Preferably the polyester contain 40-90 mol.% of bibenzoic acid and 60-10 mol.% of the aliphatic dicarbozylic acid. Polyesterification may be effected by heating dialkyl esters of the acids with the glycol in the presence of an ester-interchange catalyst (many specified) or by reacting diacyl chlorides of the acids with the glycol. In examples polyesters are made by reacting (1) and (4) Bibenzoyl chloride, diglycolyl chloride and 2,21(p-phenzylene)diethanol or cis-1,4-quinitol; (2) and (3) diethyl bibenzoate, diethyl diglyollate and diethylene glycol or triethylene glycol; (5) Bibenzoyl chloride, the diacid chloride of b ,b 1-oxydipropionic acid and p-xylylene glycol; (6) and (10) Diethyl bibenzoate, diethyl sebacate and p-xylylene glycol or diethylene glycol; (7) Diethyl bibenzoate, diethyl succinate and p-xylylene glycol; (8), (9) and (11) Bibenzoyl chloride, sebacyl chloride and p-xylylene glycol, cis-1,4-quinitol or 2,21(p-phenylenedioxy)-diethanol.
