titleOfInvention A process for the purification of alpha-beta, unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes
abstract One or more saturated aliphatic aldehydes are removed from an a ,b -unsaturated aldehyde containing minor proportions of the saturated aldehyde(s) by contacting the mixture with a catalytic amount of an aluminium alcoholate under substantially anhydrous conditions at a temperature below 50 DEG C. and separating the purified a ,b -unsaturated aldehyde from the mixture. The process is particularly suitable for the purification of acrolein and methacrolein containing minor proportions of saturated aldehydes having similar boiling points. Suitable aluminium alcoholates are those of methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, isobutyl and allyl alcohols and of 4-methyl-pentanol-2 and cyclohexanol, and those in which the alkoxide groups are dissimilar. The aluminium alkoxide is, in general, used in an amount not exceeding 1 mol %. Under the above conditions the saturated alcohol undergoes self-condensation and, to some extent, reaction with the unsaturated aldehyde with the formation of higher boiling reaction products consisting essentially of mixed esters. The unsaturated aldehyde may then be readily separated from the mixture, for example by decantation, stratification or distillation. Examples are given of the purification of acrolein, containing propionaldehyde and acetaldehydes as impurities, by treatment with aluminium secondary butoxide.
