In a device for mixing a plurality of flowing liquid streams, Figs. 2 and 3, the non-magnetic (suitably glass) mixing chamber 30 has at least two inlets 26, 28 and an outlet 32, and contains a freely movable stirrer comprising a piece of magnetic material 34 sealed in a glass envelope 36. The stirrer is rotated by a magnet 38 outside the mixing chamber and rotated by motor 40. As applied to the preparation of a mixture for the colourinetice determination of cholesterol, a proportioning pump 12, Fig. 1, supplies blood serum, glacial acetic acid and colour reagent through conduits 14, 16, 18 respectively, and through conduit 20 air to divide the stream of liquid into successive discrete segments.
