titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the polymerization of ethylene |
abstract | Ethylene is polymerized in the presence of a hydride of a metal selected from Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, V, Nb, Ta, Pa, Mn, Tc, Re. The hydride may be formed in situ by reacting the metal with hydrogen. The hydride is preferably in a finely divided state and has a freshly exposed surface. The polymerization may be effected in bulk or in the presence of an inert diluent or solvent such as hexane, heptane, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene, xylene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, or chlorbenzene. The finely divided hydride can be activated with a halogen such as iodine or bromine, a hydrogen halide such as hydrogen chloride or bromide, or a halide of the metals themselves. In the examples the polymerization is effected in a cylindrical vibratory ball mill constructed of stainless steel which is filled to 80% with 0,5 inch stainless steel balls. Specification 836,305 also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 836,305. |
