A process for recording on a photographic film, one or more visible traces representing the variations with time of one or more phenomena under observation comprises an all-over exposure to radiation at a level below that needed to produce a readily visible image but sufficient to fog the film slightly before exposure to a high-intensity recording beam. After the recording beam has produced a latent trace, the film is subjected to an all-over exposure of a duration and intensity sufficient to render the latent trace visible. A film suitable for this process includes an emulsion containing silver citrate and/or an excess of silver nitrate. Suitable pre-exposure times are a constant exposure for 14 hours to a 100-watt incandescent lamp at 9 feet or for half an hour to a 40-watt incandescent lamp at 1 foot. Pre-exposure to fluorescent radiation permits a reduction in pre-exposure time but results in loss of writing speed and contrast in recording. Pre-exposure for half an hour to a 40-watt incandescent lamp at 1 foot with the energy supplied increasing exponentially with time from zero is also suitable. The latent trace is produced with radiant energy from a mercury lamp in the apparatus described in Specification 883,517. The postexposure step may be for a tenth of a second at 12 inches from a mercury lamp or at 2 to 6 inches from a 105-115 volt fluorescent lamp. The trace is finally stable, but permanent stability may be ensured by chemically processing the film either before or after the postexposure step.
