titleOfInvention Aluminium oxide filler for the brightening of paper
abstract An aluminium oxide filler for paper is prepared by incomplete thermal decomposition of hydrated aluminium sulphate to produce an alumina containing more than 5% SO3. The initial aluminium sulphate, preferably the octadecahydrate, may be prepared by treating Bayer aluminium hydroxide or calcined kaolin with sulphuric acid and separating the silica before crystallising the octadecahydrate. Alternatively the silica from the kaolin may be left as an additional filler. According to an example, crystalline aluminium sulphate octadecahydrate is injected in suspension with air into the upper end of a conical heating chamber, at the lower end of which combustion gases enter tangentially. Effluent gases leave tangentically from the top of the chamber and deposit the entrained aluminium oxide formed in a cyclone. The outlet temperature may be from 800-1100 DEG C. Reference is made to the employment of such alumina as a component in a bleached sulphite cellulose which also contains aluminium sulphate. Specification 673,336 is referred to.
