titleOfInvention | Treatment of metal surfaces for the manufacture of lithographic plates |
abstract | A lithographic plate is made by first treating a metal base with a hot aqueous solution of a composition comprising a phosphate glass, a silicate and a compound selected from the class of borates, phosphomolybdates and silicomolybdates, and then coating the resulting hydrophilic layer with a water-soluble, high molecular weight (i.e. above 230), light-sensitive diazo compound capable of being tanned by U.V. light to produce a positive visible image (see Group XX). The metal base may be of aluminium or an alloy thereof, or of copper, lead or zinc. The solution preferably contains, by weight, 2-15% alkali metal or alkaline earth metal phosphate glass, 0,5-3% alkali metal silicate (particularly sodium metasilicate), and 0,5-3% alkali metal or alkaline earth metal borate, phosphomolybdate or silicomolybdate e.g. borax, potassium tetraborate, sodium or potassium metaborate, lithium tetraborate or metaborate, calcium or strontium metaborate, sodium silico-12-molybdate, sodium 2-phospho-18-molybdate and sodium phospho-12-molybdate, and is preferably used at a temperature of 50-100 DEG C. Specifications 223,994, 764,442, and U.S.A. Specifications 2,035,380, 2,475,946, 2,507,956, 2,568,936, 2,714,066, 2,773,779, 2,796,371 and 2,826,501 are referred to. |
