abstract The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0882592/IV (b)/1> wherein, when Ri is benzyl, Rii is- <FORM:0882592/IV (b)/2> or, when Ri is H, Rii is <FORM:0882592/IV (b)/3> Ac representing acetyl, and the preparation thereof by condensing 4-benzyloxygramine with an alkali metal derivative of a malonic ester of the general formula <FORM:0882592/IV (b)/4> wherein Riii is either acetyl or -COH, to give an indole wherein Ri is benzyl and Rii is <FORM:0882592/IV (b)/5> and hydrolysing and decarboxylating the product in either order and removing the benzyl group by hydrogenation.
