titleOfInvention | New pyridine compounds |
abstract | The invention comprises compounds of the formulae <FORM:0881896/IV (b)/1> in which R1 and R2 are 3-pyridine or 4-pyridine radicals which may optionally bear alkyl substituents of up to 3 carbon atoms, R3 and R4 are C1-5 alkyl radicals and X is a carbinol group, such as 2-methyl-1 : 2-bis-(3-pyridyl)-propan-1-ol and 3 : 3-bis-(3-pyridyl)-butan-2-ol, and salts and quaternary ammonium compounds of these compounds and mixtures thereof. It comprises also the preparation of these compounds by reducing the corresponding ketones e.g. by catalytic hydrogenation or by means of a di-metal hydride such as lithium aluminium hydride or sodium borohydride, and if desired converting any salt obtained into the free base or converting a free base into a salt or quarternary compound.ALSO:Pharmaceutical preparations having hypoglycaemic activity comprise bis-pyridyl carbinols of the formula <FORM:0881896/VI/1> or <FORM:0881896/VI/2> in which R1 and R2 are 3-pyridine or 4-pyridine radicals optionally bearing C1-3 alkyl substituents, R3 and R4 are C1-5 alkyl radicals, and X is a carbinol group, or salts or quaternary compounds thereof (see Group IV (b)) in admixture with pharmaceutical organic or inorganic, solid or liquid carriers suitable for enteral, e.g. oral, or parenteral administration. The preparations suitably take the form of tablets, dragees, capsules, solutions or emulsions. Specified salts are: hydrohalides, thiocyanates, sulphates, phosphates, formates, acetates, propionates, lactates, glycollates, pyruvates, oxalates, malonates, succinates, maleates, malates, hydroxy-and dihydroxy-maleates, fumarates, tartrates, citrates, ascorbates, benzoates, phenylacetates, 4 - aminobenzoates, 4 - hydroxybenzoates, anthranilates, cinnamates, mardelates, salicylates, p-aminosalicylates, 2-phenoxybenzoates, 2 - acetoxybenzoates, methane -, ethane-, hydroxyethane -, benzene -, p - toluene - and naphthalene-sulphonates, sulphanilates, and salts with methionine, tryptophane, lysine and arginine; and quaternary ammonium salts formed with alkyl halides, dialkyl sulphates and alkyl arylsulphonates. |
