abstract A fertiliser is prepared from vegetable substance by treatment substantially at ambient temperature with nitric acid of concentration at least 50 g/l followed by treatment at approximately 100 DEG C. in the presence of a basic product such as potash or soda, sodium or potassium carbonates or phosphates, paper manufacture residual liquors. Supplementary organic and inorganic material may be added, such as peat, lignite and organic waste such as sawdust from which the water and resins have been removed by heating above 170 DEG C., potassium chloride.
