titleOfInvention Dye-receptive graft copolymers, method for preparing same and shaped articles fabricated therefrom
abstract Dye-receptive graft copolymers comprise an olefin polymer derived from a 2 to 6 carbon atom non-aromatic hydrocarbon monoolefin having attached thereto a minor proportion of graft copolymerized units consisting of a polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomer having dye-receptive properties in polymeric form, e.g. alkenyl aromatic sulphonic acids and salts and esters thereof, olefin sulphonic acids and salts and esters thereof, sulphonated acrylic and methacrylic esters and salts and esters thereof, acryloyl taurine and salts and esters thereof, vinyl pyridine and lower alkyl derivatives thereof, aminated alkenyl aromatic monomers, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids with aminoalkanos, polyglycol ethers of alkenyl aromatic monomers, N-vinyl lactams and N-vinyl-3-morpholinone. Olefin polymers specified are polyethylene, polypropylene and poly-4-methylpentene. The graft polymerization may be effected on the polymeric substrate in either shaped or unshaped form and with the aid of a catalyst or catalyzing influence, e.g. peroxidic compounds, ultra-violet and high energy irradiation, including the irradiation of the polyolefin substrate prior to contacting with monomer. Alternatively the polyolefin substrate may be treated with ozone prior to contacting with monomer. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 825,680, 843,190 and 850,471.
