| abstract | The invention comprises compounds having the formula <FORM:0880463/IV (b)/1> with an additional double bond, if desired, at the 1-position, wherein X is hydrogen, a -halogen-, a -methoxy- or a -ethoxy; Y is keto or b -hydroxyl; 21-esters and acid esters of the compounds derived from mono- and dicarboxylic acids containing up to 20 carbon atoms and alkali and alkaline earth metal salts of said acid esters and a process for converting a 3-keto-D 4-16-methylene compound of the formula <FORM:0880463/IV (b)/2> including, if desired, an additional double bond at the 1-position, to the corresponding 16-methyl steroid of formula I, which comprises selectively hydrogenating the starting material in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, e.g. lead deactivated palladium an calcium carbonate. Illsutrative products of the invention are 16a -methyl-D 4-pregnene-11b , 17a , 21-triol-3,20-dione, the corresponding 11-keto-compound and 9-halo, 9-methoxy- and 9-ethoxy derivatives thereof.
