abstract The invention comprises steroids of the formula <FORM:0880071/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an alkanoyl radical containing at most 6 carbon atoms, X is -CH(OH)- or =C=O and Hal is a halogen atom) and their preparation by dehydrogenation of the corresponding 16,21-diesters saturated in the 1,2-position and, if desired, when the product is an 11-hydroxy compound oxidizing it to an 11-keto compound, and, if desired, saponifying the thus formed 16,21-diesters to the free 16,21-diols. Dehydrogenation is preferably affected with selenium dioxide, advantageously used in a solvent such as alcohol and in the presence of a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid. The oxidation may be effected with a chromium trioxide-pyridine complex. Examples describe the preparation of 9a -fluoro-steroids according to the invention.
