abstract | The invention comprises compounds of the formula:- <FORM:0879101/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon carboxylic acyl group of 2 to 12 carbon atoms, R2 is hydrogen or a lower alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R3 is hydrogen when R2 is a lower alkyl group or R3 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon carboxylic acyl group of 2 to 12 carbon atoms when R2 is hydrogen, R4 is lower alkyl, and X is a double bond or the C4-5 linkage of an allo compound, together with their preparation by alkali metal double hydride reduction of the corresponding 3-keto compounds, e.g. with sodium borohydride followed by esterification if required. Examples detail the preparation of 2a -methyl-19-nor androstane-3,17b -diol, its \D4 derivative and their 2a ,17a -dimethyl analogues. Specifications 853,291 and 854,407 also are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 809,485. |
