titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to cyclopentanophenanthrene compounds and process for the manufacture thereof
abstract The invention comprises 2a -lower alkyl-19-nor-D 4-androstan-17b -o1-3-ones, their 17a -lower alkyl derivatives and also the corresponding 3-hydroxy compounds together with a process for the preparation of the corresponding D 4-androstene compounds by treating 19-nortesttosterone or a 17a -lower alkyl derivative thereof with ethyl formate to form the corresponding 2-hydroxymethylene derivative, reacting the latter with a lower alkyl iodide and then eliminating the carbon monoxide from the resulting 2-formyl-2-lower alkyl compound by means of activated alumina. Detailed examples illustrate the preparation of 2a -methyl-19-nor-D 4-androsten-17b -ol-3-one, its 2a -ethyl-, 2a ,17a -dimethyl-, 2a -methyl- 17a -ethyl-, 2a -ethyl- 17a -methyl-, and 2a ,17a -diethyl analogues and the corresponding 5a -androstanes and the 17-acetates, propionates, cyclopentylpropionates and benzoates of the 17a -unsubstituted compounds. Specifications 853,291, 854,407 and 879,102 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 809,485.
