titleOfInvention Improvements in the production of dialkyl esters of iso- and/or terephthalic acids
abstract Dialkyl iso- and terephthalates are prepared by treating with a gas containing molecular oxygen at a temperature between 120 DEG and 220 DEG C. and a pressure of at least 8 atmospheres, at least one dialkyl-benzene which has two oxidisable side chains in the same position as the carboxylic acid ester groups in the desired ester and contains 1-4 carbon atoms in each side chain or at least one chlorine-substituted dialkyl-benzene of the same chain length in which at least one carbon atom in at least one alkyl group is substituted by one or two chlorine atoms, in an alkanolic solution which contains 60-98% by weight of the alkanol containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in a reaction zone permanently filled with the liquid to be oxidised and simultaneously esterified, so that throughout the treatment with oxygen there is no formation of a coherent gas phase above the liquid. Specified starting materials are m- or p-xylenes or -cymenes, m- or p-di-ethyl- or -isopropyl- or -isobutyl-benzenes, m- or p-xylene dichloride, -xylyl chloride, -xylylidene dichloride, -chloromethylcumenes, -chloroethylcumenes and 1:4-di-(chloroethyl) - benzene. Catalysts, such as soluble fatty acid salts of manganese, cobalt or vanadium, alkali metal bromides and cobalt, manganese and nickel bromides, may be used. In examples a solution of p-diisopropyl-benzene or p-xylene in methanol with a mixture of manganese acetate and cobalt bromide as catalyst is treated with oxygen to give dimethyl terephthalate. Specification 878,268 is referred to.
