titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the preparation of manganese carbonyl hydride
abstract Manganese carbonyl hydride is prepared by reacting manganese pentacarbonyl with hydrogen at pressures of 300-5000 p.s.i.g., preferably 500-2000, and at temperatures of 50-250, preferably 100-200 DEG C. for, say, 30 minutes to 4 hours. To avoid decomposition of the manganese carbonyl the reaction may be carried out under carbon monoxide pressure employing a weight ratio of carbon monoxide to hydrogen of 1 : 1 preferably 1 : 3. The manganese carbonyl reactant may be employed as a solution or dispersion in a liquid inert carrier, e.g. white mineral oil, saturated aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, ethers, diesters or silicone oils, specific examples of which are referred to. After reaction the pressure vessel is cooled and the gaseous reaction product vented preferably through a plurality of dry-ice cooled traps in which the manganese carbonyl hydride collects. Any product remaining in the residue in the vessel is isolated by purging the mixture with an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, and thereafter passing the gaseous effluent through the plurality of cold traps. Alternatively, when employing an inert liquid carrier which is immiscible with water, separation of the manganese carbonyl hydride may be effected by addition of water to the reaction mixture, followed by separation of the manganese carbonyl hydride by decantation of the aqueous phase, or by solution of the product into a water immiscible solvent, e.g. an ether or hydrocarbon. Separation of the product may also be effected by vacuum distillation employing a reflux condenser to prevent distillation of solvent, or, when a solvent is employed which is liquid at the temperature of dry ice, by cooling the mixture to precipitate the manganese carbonyl hydride, which is isolated.
