titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of steroid compounds
abstract The invention comprises the 20-ketals of 3a ,17a -dihydroxy-16a -methylpregn -9(11)- en-20-one and the 3-acyl derivatives thereof, and a process, in which these compounds are intermediates, for preparing 3a -acyloxy-17a -hydroxy-16a -methylpregn-9(11)-en-20-ones which comprises protecting the 20-ketone group of 3a -acyloxy -16- methylpregn -16 -ene- 11,20-dione by ketalization, epoxidizing the product to form a 20-ketal of a 3a -acyloxy-16b -methyl-16a ,17a -epoxypregnane-11,20-dione, reducing the 11-keto group thereof to yield a corresponding 11b -hydroxy compound, if necessary re-esterifying at the 3-position, dehydrating the product to form a 20-ketal of a 3a -acyloxy-16b -methyl-16a ,17a -epoxypregn-9(11)-en-20-one, reacting this with lithium in the presence of ethylamine so as simultaneously to sever the 16a ,17a -epoxide link, invert the steric position of the 16-methyl group and saponify the 3-acyloxy substituent and form a 20-ketal of 3a : 17a -dihydroxy-16a -methylpregn-9(11) en-20-one, acylating the 3a -hydroxy group and finally liberating the 20-ketone group. The ketalization is preferably effected with a glycol, the expoxidation with a peracid, the reduction by means of an alkali metal borohydride without or of LiA1H4 with, simultaneous hydrolysis of the 3a -acyloxy group, and the dehydration by the action of a sulphonic acid chloride. Specification 874,779 is referred to.
