titleOfInvention Synthetic resins
abstract Acrylic resin compositions of reduced inflammability comprise synthetic resins derived principally by the polymerization of acrylic or a -alkyl acrylic acids, or derivatives thereof in which the carboxyl groups have been modified (other than epoxy-group-containing compounds), together with one or more phosphoric acids and/or compounds liberating such acids. The phosphorus compounds may be added to the monomer before or during polymerization, or incorporated in the resin. Specified phosphorus compounds are ortho- and pyro-phosphoric acids, trichlorethylphosphate and mono-octyl-orthophosphate in conjunction with acrylic and methacrylic acids, and phosphorus oxychloride. Specified acrylic acid derivatives are esters and nitriles. The properties of the resins may be improved by the use of cross-linking comonomers, e.g. glycol dimethacrylate, and higher alkyl methacrylates, and by the addition of hydrophobic agents, e.g. paraffin and silicone oils. Examples describe the polymerization in the presence of azodiisobutyronitrile of mixtures comprising methyl methacrylate and (1) phosphoric acid; (2) glycol dimethacrylate and phosphoric acid; (3) acrylonitrile and phosphoric acid; (4) methacrylic acid and trichlorethylphosphate, and (5) methacrylic acid and mono-octyl orthophosphate.
