titleOfInvention Tank for storing low temperature liquids in ambient surroundings
abstract 870,267. Storing liquefied gases. GARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 9, 1957, No. 25286/57. Class 8(2). The space between inner and outer walls 5, 6 of a liquefied gas e.g., hydrogen container of cylindrical form is occupied by an insulating layer 19 surrounding and adjacent the wall 5 and an insulating member 16 surrounding the layer 19 and having on its inner face parallel grooves 17 connecting headers 22, 23 at the ends of the container and through which is circulated by a blower 40 cold gas withdrawn from above the liquid level 30 through an aperture 31 in the wall 5 and insulating layer 19, the member 16 also having on its outer face parallel grooves 18 adjacent the inner face of wall 6 and connecting headers 28, 29 at the container ends through which is circulated by a blower 53 a warm gas whereby frost is prevented from forming on the outer face of the container wall 6. The blower 40 withdraws hydrogen gas from header 23 through ducts 34, 35, a pass 37 of a heat exchanger 38 having a path 43 traversed by liquid hydrogen which is thereby vaporized and discharged through a supply line 44, and a duct 39 leading to the header 22. The warm gas blower 53 draws hydrogen gas from header 29 through a duct 48, path 50 of a heat 'exchanger 51 warmed by engine exhaust gas traversing a path 54, and the so warmed hydrogen traverses a duct 52 leading to the header 28. An alternative or supplementary supply of warm gas to path 54 of exchanger 51 comprises combustion products of a furnace 59 supplied with hydrogen gas through a duct 62 branching from duct 52 and with oxygen through a duct 60. A relief valve 66 in duct 48 allows venting of the gas space of the container to atmosphere through a duct 43, packing 47 and the duct 48. Specifications 870,265 and 870,269 are referred to.
