titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of mesityl oxide copolymers
abstract Copolymers are prepared by heating a diethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon with mesityl oxide. The hydrocarbon may be 1, 3-butadiene, 1, 3-pentadiene, 2-methyl-1, 3-butadiene, 2, 4-hexadiene, 1, 3-heptadiene, or 2, 4-undecadiene. A catalyst such as hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, di-tert-butyl peroxide or tert-butyl perbenzoate may be employed, and the reaction mixture may contain diluents such as benzene, toluene, xylene or a paraffin. The reaction may be conducted in a continuous operation by adding butadiene and catalyst to a stream of mesityl oxide. Polymerization may be stopped at partial conversion by cooling or by boiling off unreacted monomers.ALSO:Coatings are applied to metal surfaces, particularly tin plated sheet steel, by applying to the surface, e.g. by roller coating or dipping, a liquid copolymer of mesityl oxide and a diethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon, particularly butadiene-1,3, (see Group IV(a)), and baking at 150-260 DEG C. The process is particularly suitable for lining cans.
