titleOfInvention New n-aryl-alkanamides, their preparation and use as herbicides
abstract The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0869169/IV (b)/1> where R is a saturated alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and X and Y are chlorine atoms or methyl groups and may be the same or different, and a process for their preparation by reacting a disubstituted aniline of the formula: <FORM:0869169/IV (b)/2> with an acyl halide R,CH(CH3)COCl. The reaction is preferably carried out by adding the acyl chloride to a solution of the aniline in an organic solvent e.g. benzene or diethyl ether in the presence of an acid acceptor e.g. sodium carbonate or triethylamine. Examples describe the preparation of mono- and dichloro compounds where R is CH3, C3H7 and C4H9, and the m.p. of other compounds of the invention are tabulated.ALSO:A selective herbicidal composition comprises an inert diluent or carrier and, as active ingredient, a compound of the formula <FORM:0869169/VI/1> where R is a saturated alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms and X and Y are chlorine or methyl groups and may be the same or different. The usual solid or liquid carriers and surfactant additives may be used and the composition may be prepared in the form of an emulsion, aqueus suspension or wettable powder. Examples are given.
