abstract A composition for acting on the growth of plants comprises an active compound of formula <FORM:0869078/VI/1> or a salt thereof wherein Y is an oxygen or sulphur atom, R1 is a C1-C14 branched or straight chain, saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon radical of which the chain may be interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms and one or more hydrogen atoms may be replaced by halogen atoms, R2 is a C1-C13 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, and X is -COOH or -COOR wherein R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical or X is a -CONH2 group wherein one or both hydrogen atoms may be replaced by alkyl groups or X is -CN, provided that R1 and R2 together contain between 6 and 18 carbon atoms, the said active compound being mixed with or dispersed in a solid carrier material, if desired with the addition of one or more additives comprising surface-active substances, dispersion agents and adhesives, or in a liquid carrier material with the addition of one or more additives. Specified compounds include alkoxy derivatives of acetic and propionic acids, their esters and amides, and of aceto- and propionitrile. The Specification includes a table giving a substantial list.
