abstract | Racemic or optically active 1b -carboxymethyl-2b - methoxycarbonyl-3a - methoxy-4b -acetoxy -6b -formyl-cyclohexane is prepared by reacting racemic or optically active methyl ester of 3b -acetoxy-2a -methoxy-7-oxo-1,2,3,4, 4aa ,7,8,8aa - octohydronaphthalene- 1b - carboxylic acid with ozone in solution in an organic solvent and decomposing the resulting ozonide with water at a low temperature (below -15 DEG C.) in the presence of a phenolic anti-oxidant, e.g. hydroquinone.
