titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to electrical insulation |
abstract | A uniform self-adhering rubber tape, for insulating electric conductors, has not more than four plane sides each of which forms an acute internal angle with at least one adjacent side, e.g. the tape may be of triangular or rhomboidal cross-section. The tape is helically lapped on to a conductor in such a way that each turn is partially overlapped by the abutting side of the next adjacent turn. The material of the tape may be silicone rubber incorporating up to 1% of boron; it may be reinforced with glass cloth or other fabric which may be pre-treated with semi-conductive compound to relieve surface stress, or threads or ribbons of silicone rubber containing carbon black, tin oxide or powdered metal may be embedded in the tape surface where no reinforcement is present. One edge may be coloured to facilitate precise overlapping and this edge may be semi-conductive for stress relieving. The newly-insulated conductor may be subjected momentarily to a vacuum, to remove any entrapped air, and then allowed to cure either at room temperature or by heating. Specification 859,284 is referred to. |
